My son has been diagnosed autistic, PDD-NOS. He is on the very mild side of autism. He was diagnosed with Verbal Apraxia. [link]

This journal entry has be created due to a mildly annoying situation I ran into yesterday. I took my family to a park to enjoy the fresh air, trees, sun and introduce my two and a half year old son to one of the streams that feed the lake.

I loved playing on the rocks and messing with the mini waterfalls when I was a kid. well, as i suspected, he loved it. Anyways, after relaxing on a blanket, shaded by the shadow of a tree, it was time to go see grandma. On our way to grandmas house, over the river and through the woods, we stopped at a Carvel Ice Cream shop for a treat.

My son really doesn't like help eating food. When it comes to ice cream, he is so slow, that it all melts before he gets to eat it. After drilling the girl behind the counter about his peanut allergy, we asked that she only give him half the serving and when he was done, we would get the other half. no problem at all.

We sat down on the bench and ate our ice cream. my son was in his stroller, and we gave him a spoon with a little dab of ice cream on it. Well, he basically just touched it and didn't do to much eating of it. So, after i finished my ice cream, I tried to feed him his. He didn't much care for my assistance and was vocal about it. Using his hands to block his face, and screams as communication. I softly told him to keep his hands down, stop screaming and open up and say ahhhhh while trying to shovel the dairy frozen goodness into his mouth. Apparently, while I was doing this the manager came over and starred at me with a look of annoyance for a brief, but too long period of time, and my wife noticed. She did not point it out to me as it was happening, because she knows I would have flipped my shit on that prick.

When I got home, and looked at the pictures I took, this one seemed to jump out at me.

If that guy saw my wife and son at that moment of the camera went click, he would have had a different attitude towards us.

My sons is not a bad child. We are not bad parents.
You want to see bad behavior? Go ahead and say something about my son's "communication" and I will assure you Mr Fuckin' Ice Cream Man, I will drown your ass in vanilla chocolate soft serve twist and stuff your ass in a freezer.

Bravo to you for this feature. Glad to see a feature with a purpose. My wife worked with children with autism a few years ago for the school system. While it was some of the most physical & emmotional demanding work she had ever done, she also felt it was the most rewarding.

Im really sorry to hear about your son's problem, but i see that he's very happy and enjoying life, so that's what's important, and nevermind those pricks that are so ignorant, the world is full of them, anyway you have a beautiful and happy son, congratulations, so enjoy every moment with him, and try to support him anytime he needs it, im sure you already know that, but oh well! Good luck man!

Thank you so much or my first feature! I know how hard it can be sometimes. Just stay calm, stay strong and never give up. Always remember those happy times when he is having a meltdown.

Autism disorder is in all I know, a very serious and all pervasive condition with symptoms ranging from very mild ones (as your child has) to very serious. It's incurable, and for all we know inborn; extremely likely a genetic/fetal development issue.

Since many people find anyone even minutely different annoying (many people don't like Blacks, Chinese, gays, Jews and even women) it's no wonder that they are intolerant to autism!

I think that people should not be blamed, it takes an effort to accept some not obvious things (like someone having a disability that's not visible - if people would see a child without an arm or a leg, everyone would be extremely gentle to it; but autism is not so visible). Autism was only recognized in the mid-20th-century!

People mostly act on their first impressions, that's how our brains are made, that's why we see skin color first and a person behind it second. It's takes a voluntary effort to really understand others.

So I must praise your effort to raise the awareness of such a not-obvious disability.

You have all my support.
