Artificial HDR of Main St

Description

EDIT: Replaced photo after critique by Dennis Chunga. Thank you for the input.

I am fascinated with people who HDR their work. Problem is I have yet to get some good quality photos that are bracketed in one form or another.

Since I am in kind of a rut, I decided to see if its possible to HDR a photo with fudging the bracketing. So I took "Main St Danbury CT" to the Paint Shop Pro 9.0 drawing board and used curve edit to mimic bracketing the photo.
Original photo [link]

I don't know the right terminology here, but I used one with the curve raised to the next intersecting lines of the 9 block curve edit graph, keeping the line straight, and one lowered to the next intersect.

In Photomatix Pro, I HDR'd the three images, and used some guild lines to tone mapping that *DennisChunga recommended after i told him that I found all the adjustments very confusing. Check out his page... nothing is safe from HDR with him!

The result is as you see here. Not true HDR, but I think it made the photo more interesting than it was before.

Please be kind, but let me know if you think I pulled it off.

Great job! I've been trying to figure out how HDR works myself but, like you said, I have had some trouble figuring out what the different settings effect in Photomatrix. This is a lot better than any of them I've tried so far. ;P

Though, I do have to agree with the previous comment. The orange street glow does detract from the overall photo.
